Gisela Lemon is the family readiness officer for the base’s newest unit, VMU-3. While the unit may be fresh on its feet, Gisela brings with her seven years of Marine Corps volunteer experience. She served as a key volunteer coordinator while stationed at Camp Lejeune and helped start an English as a Second Language program while her husband was on recruiting duty in Missouri. When the couple moved to Twentynine Palms, Gisela decided to put her skills and experience to work. “Honestly, I never thought that my volunteering would lead anywhere, but when I saw the job description I realized I’d been training for this position throughout the past six years,” she said.

Moving to Twentynine Palms also provided incredible opportunities to satiate Gisela’s love of hiking. She hopes to do a Joshua Tree National Park hike every weekend. Her two daughters, ages 10 and 13, also keep life interesting for Gisela when she’s not on the job.

Of course, as a family readiness officer, you’re never truly “off the job.” New families join VMU-3 every day, stretching Lemon’s outreach and putting into play that most crucial of Marine Corps mottos: Semper Gumby, always flexible These first families will be foundational in molding this unmanned aerial vehicle squadron and carrying it into the future, whatever that may hold.
