Sonette “Sony” Avalos, family readiness officer for MWSS-374, first learned the importance of military family support while stationed in Virginia with her husband, who she has been married to for nine of his 10 years of service. While her husband was deployed, a pipe burst above her townhouse, flooding her home and wreaking havoc on her life. Maintenance simply turned off the water supply, leaving Sony and her three young children to clean up the mess. The subsequent ceiling collapse and a simultaneous visit from an unabashed rat living under her sink forced the self-sufficient Sony to ask for help. She called the number of a “key wife” from her unit. This volunteer spouse helped her through the hardships and opened doors for Sony to begin volunteering. Many more deployments would come, from Japan to Iraq, some lasting over a year, but Sony was now better equipped to thrive. Her grandfather, a Navy retiree, has also inspired her with ways to manage life back home while her Marine is fighting on the front.

“Public service is my passion,” Sony said. She volunteers at the ASYMCA aboard base, at her kids’ school, and wherever else she’s needed. Before becoming a family readiness officer, Sony also volunteered for the family readiness program, helping fellow spouses find their way through the maze of the Marine Corps.
