Kathleen Schmidt, Headquarters Battalion family readiness officer, is the face of the Family Readiness Program aboard the Combat Center. Her curren t position was the only one she applied for after moving here from six years stationed in Okinawa, Japan. “It seems like my whole life was geared to this,” Kathleen said. She volunteered while in Okinawa, where she served through four commanders, and worked as a teen & preteen coordinator in Yuma. She also knows the finer points of living through a deployment, having spent approximately six months of every year throughout marriage with her husband deployed. This is her family’s first non-deployable duty station.
When not ensuring the family readiness of her 1,800 Marines and their families, Kathleen spends her time studying. “I’m a bookworm,” Kathleen said. Diving deep into historical and religious works is her passion. Even her children, ages 13, 18 and 20, get in on it. Not all of Kathleen’s free time is spent with her nose in a book though. In 2010, she hopes to run a marathon.
Kathleen recently began recruiting volunteers to work with the Headquarters Battalion family readiness program. She is looking for volunteers who share her motto, “You’re not allowed to complain about your community unless you have been involved.” |
