.:The PCS Move:.

When the family receives orders to a new duty station; ask the current EFMP office to set an appointment with the gaining duty station EFMP to discuss things such as, the reconnection of services, housing, schools, etc.  Feel free to ask any important questions during this time.  Please inform the gaining EFMP office if you have any special needs for housing, so the housing office can be notified prior to the family’s arrival.

Welcome Aboard briefs are available to learn more about the local community as well as services available to the family once you arrive.  The Welcome Aboard briefs are held every month in the Village Center Building 1551 in the Marine Corps Family Team Building Classroom.  If this information is needed prior to arrival please contact the EFMP office (760)830-7740, so this information can be mailed.

Please request copies of military medical records, dental records, and school records about a month before PCSing if at all possible to hand carry to next duty station.  This can dramatically shorten the "reconnect" time for services that can become lengthy if the doctor or schools have to wait for records to be transferred.  Ensure their military medical records are fully updated to include any visits to outside specialists, ER visits, or civilian doctors.

.:Housing Process:.

If the family decides to live in installation housing, the first step is to obtain a housing application DD form 1746; this can be done by going to the 29 Palms Base Website or calling (760) 830-6611.  Also needed is a copy of orders showing detachment dates, and certification of family members, (Identification cards/DEERS enrollment).  Once you have completed the application, you may mail fax or email it back to your new installations housing office along with all other documentation and you will be placed on the waiting list according to the date you detach from your current unit.  Applications not submitted in person must be confirmed within 30 days of reporting to the new installation.

Those who rate special needs housing should contact the EFMP Office and inform them of any special needs so the housing office can be notified prior to arrival.  Special Needs are defined by the environmental needs noted in section 7 on page 5 of 8 of the DD form 2792 enrollment packet.  This can be central air conditioning, a one story home, wheelchair accessible etc.  Once the application and requests are submitted the family will be placed on the waiting list upon detachment from the prior unit.

.:Additional Services:.

Training and Workshops

The Exceptional Family Member Program at 29 Palms hosts trainings and workshops for parents of children with special needs. We offer parent workshops and individual consultations to provide parents with the training and information needed to better understand special education guidelines, policies and procedures. This is highly recommended before attending a child’s IEP meeting. Installation Respite Twentynine Palms EFMP families can utilize this respite program. The family must find the respite provider for their family, such as a neighbor or a family member. This is an alternative respite program that also provides several hours of care for the EFM child and their siblings so parents can enjoy a break. Please contact the EFMP offices to find out more about this benefit at the Village Center, Building 1551 Rm. 40 or call us at (760) 830-7740.
